Paralakhemundi is the capital of the Gajapati district in the south of the Indian state of Odisha .
The city lies at the foot of the Eastern Ghats in the extreme south of Odisha on the border with Andhra Pradesh . The city of Srikakulam is located 55 km south of Paralakhemundi. In the south of the city, the Mahendratanaya River , a left tributary of the Vansadhara , flows in a south-easterly direction. Above the river is the Brundavan Palace .
Several main roads lead from Paralakhemundi to the surrounding main towns. The city is connected to the railway network and lies on the Gunupur - Tekkali railway line .
Paralakhemundi has the status of a municipality . In the 2011 census, the population was 44,469.
