The district Malkangiri ( Oriya ମାଲକାନଗିରି ଜିଲ୍ଲା Mālakānagiri Jillā ) is a district in the east Indian state of Odisha .
The district is located in the mountains of the Eastern Ghats in the extreme southwest of Odisha. The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Malkangiri . The area is 5791 km². The population density is 106 inhabitants / km².
The Malkangiri district was established on October 2, 1992, when it was separated from the then Koraput district .

In 2011 there were 613,192 inhabitants in the district. The gender ratio was 1,020 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 48.54% (59.07% for men, 38.28% for women). The vast majority of the population is Hindu (97.88%).

The district consists of a sub-division : Malkangiri.
