Malkangiri is the capital of the district of the same name in the extreme southwest of the Indian state of Odisha .
Malkangiri is located in the hill country of the Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 183 m . The national highway NH 326 connects Malkangiri with the city of Jeypore, 90 km to the northeast, and with the Godavari river valley in the south . A side road leads to the town of Sukma , 25 km west of Malkangiri .
Malkangiri has had the status of a municipality since February 2014 . In the 2011 census, the population was 31,007.
