Rivers in South India |
The approximately 1465 km long Godavari ( Marathi गोदावरी , Telugu గోదావరి ) is - after the Ganges and Indus - one of the main waterways of the Indian subcontinent and is also considered sacred by many Hindus.
course
The Godavari, which flows in a west-east direction across the subcontinent, rises in the Western Ghats west of Nashik near the small town of Trimbak in the state of Maharashtra and flows through the south of central India ( Chhattisgarh , Telangana and Andhra Pradesh ); it finally flows into the Bay of Bengal . At Rajahmundry , about 80 km off the coast , the river splits into two arms ( Gautami Godavari in the north and Vasishta Godavari in the south); here its ultimately four-armed delta begins .
use
The Godavari is dammed several times; the reservoirs are used to supply drinking water, but are contaminated by the entry of pesticides and fertilizers . The water is primarily used for field irrigation , but several hydropower plants are also operated.
level
A special feature of the Godavari, but also of other South Indian rivers, is that their upper reaches almost dry out in winter ( cold ) and Indian summer ( hot ), i.e. in the months of January to mid-June, and in the monsoon season ( wet ), i.e. in the Months from mid-June to late September or mid-October, large areas along their banks were flooded.
Most important neighboring locations
- Trimbak , Nashik , Nanded in Maharashtra
- Bhadrachalam , Rajahmundry , Kovvur in Andhra Pradesh.
religion
As with many other rivers in India, the banks of the Godavari are the destination of many pilgrims . The most important places of pilgrimage are Trimbak , Nashik and Bhadrachalam .
