Puntamba ( Marathi : पुणतांबा ) is a small town with about 13,500 inhabitants in the Ahmednagar district in the Indian state of Maharashtra .
location
Puntamba is located on the south bank of the Godavari River on the Dekkan Plateau at an altitude of almost 500 m above sea level. d. M. The district capital Ahmednagar is approx. 84 km (driving distance) south. The climate is subtropical and warm; Rain falls mainly in the summer monsoon season .
population
The mostly Marathi- speaking population consists of approx. 95% Hindus and almost 5% Muslims; other religions hardly play a role in the country. The male population is around 3% higher than the female.
economy
Agriculture has formed the basis of (survival) life in the rocky and sometimes steppe-like region for centuries; Small traders, craftsmen and day laborers have settled in the small town itself.
history
The history of the place possibly goes back to around 200 BC. King named Shalivahana residing in Pratiṣṭhāna (today Paithan ). Otherwise the rather barren region remained outside the interests of the respective rulers. It is reported that the Marathenkönigin Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century, close to town situated banks of the Godavari with stairs ( ghats ) fix has made.
Attractions
- The old town was formerly surrounded by a wall, of which only small remains have been preserved.
- There are several older houses that enclose a courtyard ( vadas ).
- The modern Changdeo Temple, in which the figure of a meditating holy man ( Changdeo ) is venerated, is regionally famous ; a tiger and a cobra watch over him.
