Trimbak ( Marathi : त्रिंबक ) is a small town with a population of around 13,000 in the Nashik district in the Indian state of Maharashtra . One of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India is located here.

location

Trimbak is located in a wooded region in the north of the Western Ghats near the Godavari source at an altitude of approx. 725 m above sea level. d. M. The district capital Nashik is approx. 29 km (driving distance) to the east. Because of the altitude, the climate is moderate; Rain falls mainly in the summer monsoon season .

population

Official population statistics have only been kept since 1991 and are published regularly. The sustained increase in urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from the surrounding area.

Residents 7,883 9,804 12,056

The population consists of around 96.5% Hindus and just under 3.5% Muslims; other religions hardly play a role in the country. The male population is around 5% higher than the female.

economy

Agriculture has formed the basis of (survival) life in the rainy and wooded mountain region for centuries, but internal Indian pilgrimage tourism has also played an important role as a source of income since ancient times.

history

The place and the region are full of religious legends and myths; it was mostly outside the territorial and political interests of the regional and supra-regional powers. A blue diamond ( Nassak Diamond ) found in the 15th century in what is now Telangana state was donated to the Trimbakeshwara Temple, but stolen by the British in the 19th century; he is now in the USA. Today's temple was not built until the middle of the 18th century.

Attractions

Trimbakeshwara Temple
  • The most important sight is the Trimbakeshwara Temple, located in the middle of the village and raised on a pedestal. The lingam stone venerated here is decorated with reliefs of the Hindu gods Brahma , Shiva and Vishnu ; In addition, it is adorned with a fabulously old crown set with precious stones. The current temple construction was commissioned by Balaji Baji Rao , a Peshwa of the Marathas ; its architecture shows some Islamic influences (e.g. multi-pass arches at the entrances), and there is no figural decoration on the outside. The decor of the Shikhara tower above the cella ( garbhagriha ) consists mainly of hundreds of kalasha jugs stacked on top of each other .
  • Opposite the entrance to the main temple is a separate shrine for the Nandi bull, Shiva's mount ( vahana ).
  • A temple pond ( kund ) is used by pilgrims to purify body and mind.
  • There are several ashrams and samadhis in the vicinity of the temple .

Festivals

The Kumbh Mela festival is celebrated here and in Nashik every 12 years .
