The Vela Bluff is a large and isolated nunatak in Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . It marks the only known route over the lower section of the Ryder Glacier and rises 8 km west of the Canopus Crags and 18 km inland of the Rymill coast .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the Nunatak on July 21, 1976 after the constellation Vela .
