Headwaters and course of the Manjira |
The approximately 745 km long Manjira also Manjeera ( Marathi : मांजरा; Kannada : ಮಂಜೀರ; Telugu : మంజీర) is one of the larger tributaries of the Godavari .
course
The Manjira rises in the Balaghat Range , i. H. roughly in the geographic center of the Indian state of Maharashtra . From there it flows in a south-easterly direction, crosses the extreme northeast of Karnataka , before turning north in the state of Telangana , on its last stretch forming the border with Maharashtra and finally flowing into the Godavari far away from any place.
use
The Manjira is dammed twice ( Singur Reservoir and Nizam Sagar Dam ); the reservoirs are used to supply drinking water, but are also polluted by the entry of pesticides and fertilizers . The water is primarily used for field irrigation , but hydropower plants are also operated.
level
A special feature of the Manjira, but also of other South Indian rivers, is that their upper reaches almost dry out in winter ( cold ) and Indian summer ( hot ), i.e. in the months of January to mid-June, and in the monsoon season ( wet ), i.e. in the Months from mid-June to late September or mid-October, large areas along their banks were flooded. As a result, there are no cities or larger towns on its banks; the nearest large cities of Latur (MH) and Bidar (KA) are each a good 10 km south of the river.
ecology
The Manjira Wildlife Bird Sanctuary was established in 1978 in the Medak district of Telangana state ; Some of the endangered marsh crocodiles as well as monitor lizards , cobras etc. also live here , but wild boars , jackals , mongooses etc. have also been spotted.
