Medak ( Telugu : మెదక్ జిల్లా) is a district in the Indian state of Telangana . The administrative seat is the city of Medak .

geography

The district is located in the northwest of Telangana . It is framed in the west by the state of Karnataka , in the north by the district of Nizamabad , in the north-east and east by the district of Rangareddy , in the east by the district of Nalgonda , in the south-east by the districts of Guntur and Prakasam and in the south by the district of Kurnool .

The district has an area of ​​9,700 km 2 . 906 km 2 (9.3 percent) of the area are forested. The main rivers in the district are Manjira, Haldi and Kundliar.

The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons . March to May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from the second week of June to the second week of October brings the most abundant rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the end of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. The months of January and February are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average of the amount of precipitation is 1001 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 708 mm and the northeast monsoon 105 mm. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. During the monsoon season there is a humidity of up to 80 percent. This falls to 30 percent in the dry period.

The last census in 2011 counted 3,031,877 inhabitants. Of these, 1,524,187 were men (50.3 percent) and 1,507,690 women. In 2001 the Dalit numbered 469,492 (17.6 percent) and the Adivasi 134,533 (5.0 percent) people. Of the total number of residents, 728,121 people (24 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011. The majority of the population of Medak district speaks Telugu . There are 1,225 inhabited villages in the entire district.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Medak district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase was just under 13.5 percent between the last two censuses and is still significant in absolute terms. From 2001 to 2011 the population increased by nearly 360,000 people. Significant places

The district with the largest population is Siddipet with around 60,000 inhabitants. Other important cities with over 50,000 inhabitants are the capital Sangareddi and Ramachandrapuram .

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. Mainly carrot millet (sorghum), rice, cotton, corn, pigeon peas , chilli, sesame and sugar cane are grown. In addition, hand weaving is an important branch of business. There are only around 300 industrial companies in the entire district, mainly in the chemical, pharmaceutical and steel sectors. Various types of rock (limestone, granite, etc.) and sand, which are used industrially, are found in natural resources. In the cities, people live from trading in goods and services.

history

Medak is part of the Telangana region and shares its history. The area used to be known as Methukudurgam and Siddapur Medak . Until 1956, the area was a region in Hyderabad State. After that, Medak became an administrative unit within the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh. With the separation of Telangana State, Medak came to this.
