Nizamabad , also Indhooru ( Telugu : నిజామాబాదు జిల్లా; Urdu : نظام آباد ضلع) is a district in the Indian state of Telangana . The administrative seat is the city of Nizamabad .

geography

The district is in the north of Telangana . It is framed to the west by the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra , to the north by the Adilabad district , to the east by the Karimnagar district and to the south by the Medak district .

The district has an area of ​​7956 km², of which 1812 km² (22.8 percent) is forested. The main rivers in the district are Godavari, Manjira, Maneru, Phalungi and Yedlakattavagu. There are also two larger lakes in (or partially in) the district: Nizam Sagar Lake and Upper Manair Reservoir .

The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons. April and May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from the second week of June to the second week of October brings the most abundant rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the end of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. The months of January to March are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average rainfall is 813 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 696 mm and the northeast monsoon 72 mm. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. The coldest month is December (average 21.64 ° - daily minimum 15 °, maximum 28 °), the warmest May (average 32.83 ° - minimum 26 °, maximum 40 °). During the Mosun season there is a humidity of up to 80 percent. This falls to 30 percent in the dry period.

The last census in 2011 counted 2,552,073 inhabitants. Of these, 1,252,191 were men (49.1 percent) and 1,299,882 women. Among the Dalits were 2001 348.158 (14.8 percent), the Adivasi 165,735 (7.1 per cent) people. Of the total number of residents, 587,800 people (23.03 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011. The majority of the population of Nizamabad District speaks Telugu . A significant number of people speak Urdu as their first language. There are 922 inhabited villages in the entire district.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Nizamabad district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase was only 8.8 percent between the last two censuses, but is still significant in absolute terms. From 2001 to 2011 the population increased by over 200,000 people. The most populous town in the district is the main town Nizamabad with almost 290,000 residents. Other important cities with over 50,000 inhabitants are Bodhan and Kamareddy .

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. The main crops are rice, corn, soybeans, mung beans , sugar cane, sunflowers, cotton, ancient beans , black millet (sorghum) and turmeric . In addition, hand weaving is an important branch of business. There are only a few small industrial companies (power generation, granite mills and sugar factories) in the entire district. Various types of rock (limestone, granite, etc.) that are used industrially can be found in natural resources. In the cities, people live from trading in goods and services.

history

Nizamabad is part of the Telangana region and shares its history. The current name of the district and main town was given in honor of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, the then Nizab of Hyderabad. Until 1956, the area was a region in Hyderabad State. Since then, Nizamabad has been an administrative unit within the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh.
