Nalgonda , also Nallagonda ( Telugu : నల్లగొండ ) is a district in the Indian state of Telangana . The administrative seat is the city of Nalgonda .

geography

The district is in the south of Telangana . It is framed in the west by the district of Rangareddy , in the northwest by the district Medak , in the northeast by the district Warangal , in the east by the district Khammam , in the southeast by the state of Andhra Pradesh and in the south and west by the district Mahbubnagar .

The district has an area of ​​14,240 km 2 ; 837 km 2 (5.9 percent) of this is forested. The most important rivers in the district are the Krishna , Musi and Dindi.

The district's climate is characterized by hot summers and is generally dry, except during the monsoons. April and May is summer time with great drought and high temperatures. The southwest monsoon from the second week of June to the second week of October brings the most abundant rain. The subsequent northeast monsoon until the beginning of December brings somewhat lower, but still significant amounts of rain. The months of January to March are winter with cooler temperatures. The long-term average rainfall is 753 mm per year. The southwest monsoon brings 562 mm and the northeast monsoon 140 mm. Otherwise there will be little rain. This leads to the drying up of the cultivated areas in the dry season, which lasts from January to May. The coldest month is December (average 22.06 ° - daily minimum 16 °, maximum 28 °), the warmest May (average 32.61 ° - minimum 26 °, maximum 39 °). During the monsoon season there is a humidity of up to 80 percent. This falls to 30 percent in the dry period.

The last census in 2011 counted 3,483,648 inhabitants. Of these, 1,758,061 were men (50.5 percent) and 1,725,587 women. In 2001, the Dalit numbered 575,788 (17.7 percent) and the Adivasi 342,676 (10.6 percent) people. Of the total number of residents, 661,743 people (19 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011. The majority of the population of Nalgonda District speaks Telugu . There are 1,155 inhabited villages in the entire district.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Nalgonda district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase was only 7.3 percent between the last two censuses, but it is still significant in absolute terms. From 2001 to 2011 the population increased by around 235,000 people. Significant places

The most populous town in the district is the main town of Nalgonda with around 110,000 residents. Other important cities with over 50,000 inhabitants are Suriapet , Miryalaguda , Bhongir and Kodad .

economy

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. Mainly carrot millet (sorghum), pearl millet , rice, cotton, corn, legumes (peanuts, pigeon peas, etc.), chilli and sugar cane are grown. In addition, hand weaving is an important branch of business. There are few small industrial enterprises (cement, rice and sugar factories) in the whole district. Various types of rock (limestone, granite, etc.), which are used industrially, are found in natural resources. In the cities, people live from trading in goods and services.

history

Nalgonda is part of the Telangana region and shares its history. The area used to be known as Nilagiri (also Neelagiri and Nilgiri ). Until 1956 the area was a region in Hyderabad state . Since then, Nalgonda has been an administrative unit within the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh.

Fiscally, the district is now divided into the four tax districts Bhongir, Miryalaguda, Nalgonda and Suriapet.
