Ōkawa Misao

Ōkawa Misao ( Japanese 大川 ミ サ ヲ , sometimes Romanized Misawo Okawa ; born March 5, 1898 in Tenma, Kita-ku , Osaka ; † April 1, 2015 in Higashisumiyoshi-ku , Osaka) was a Japanese age record holder. At 117 years and 27 days, she was the oldest person from Japan and Asia until August 31, 2017 when Tajima Nabi broke her record, and is now (January 2020) the ninth oldest person of all time . She was the oldest living person since Jiroemon Kimura's death on June 12, 2013.

Life

Ōkawa was born on March 5, 1898, the fourth daughter of a textile merchant from the Tenma district in Osaka. In 1919 she married Ōkawa Yukio, with whom she had two daughters and a son. Her son Hiroshi and daughter Shizuyo survived. Her husband died on June 20, 1931 at the age of 36. She had four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Since 1997, Ōkawa has lived in a nursing home in the Higashisumiyoshi District. At the age of 110, she started using a wheelchair to prevent falls. She could use it to move around until she died.

Okawa has been the oldest woman alive since the death of Japanese Ōkubo Koto on January 12, 2013 . This was recognized by Guinness World Records on February 27, 2013 . She became the oldest person alive on June 12, 2013. In 2014, she cited sushi and a lot of sleep as reasons for her longevity . On her 117th birthday, Okawa said her life seemed short-lived. When asked about the secret of a long life span, she replied: "I wonder that too."

At 6:58 a.m. on April 1, 2015, Ōkawa died of heart failure in her nursing home in Osaka. At the time of her death, she was the fourth oldest person of all time, the ninth person to be verified to be 116 years old, and the fourth person to be proven to be 117 years old. After Ōkawa's death, the American Gertrude Weaver became the oldest person alive until she died five days later, on April 6, 2015.
