Subarnapur (also Sonapur or Sonepur , Oriya ସୁବର୍ଣ୍ଣପୁର ଜିଲ୍ଲା Subarṇṇapura Jillā ) is a district in the west of the east Indian state of Odisha .
The administrative seat is the city of Subarnapur . The area is 2,284.4 km². There are only three cities: Subarnapur ( Sonapur ), Binika and Tarbha , so the degree of urbanization is very low at 7.4%. The population density is about 267 inhabitants / km².
The district was formed on April 1, 1993 by separating from the Balangir district.

Subarnapur is located in the center of Odisha and borders the districts of Sambalpur , Boudh , Balangir and Bargarh .
population
In 2011 there were 610,183 inhabitants in the district, 51.0% of them men and 49.0% women (960 women for every 1000 men). The vast majority of the population is Hindu (99.19%). Islam and Christianity only play a subordinate role at around 0.3% each.
Administrative division
The district consists of the two sub-divisions Birmaharajpur and Subarnapur.
To decentralize the administration, the district is divided into 6 blocks :

- Biramaharajpur
- Dunguripalli
- Subarnapur
- Tarbha
- Ulunda
There are also 6 Tahasils :

The following Urban Local Bodies (ULB) are located in the district : the Municipality of Subarnapur and the two Notified Area Councils (NAC) Binika and Tarbha . There are also 96 gram panchayats in the district.
