Nicholas Paulus
Nikolaus Paulus (born November 6, 1853 in Krautergersheim , Alsace , † January 29, 1930 in Munich ) was a German Catholic church historian.
Life
Nikolaus Paulus was ordained a priest in 1878. A larynx ailment that occurred during his time as chaplain in Molsheim forced him to give up his career as a parish chaplain . As the chaplain of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Monastery in Munich, Paulus devoted himself to private studies of the history of the Reformation, controversial theological and territorial church history (especially in Munich libraries) from November 1885 after long spa stays . In 1896 he received his doctorate without ever having been properly matriculated. He was a member of the commission for the publication of the Corpus Catholicorum , most recently as its vice-president. Paul was honorary canon of the Strasbourg CathedralIn 1902 he was appointed monsignor .
Influenced by Johannes Janssen , Paulus presented numerous studies on the history of the Reformation that were close to sources and were not always free from decisive denominational partisanship. Perhaps his most significant work was the extensive history of the indulgence .
