The district of Khordha ( Oriya ଖୋର୍ଦ୍ଧା ଜିଲ୍ଲା Khōrd'dhā Jillā ; Hindi खुर्दा जिला ; old name: Khurda ) is a district in the Indian state of Odisha .

The district was established on April 1, 1993, when the newly established Khurda and Nayagarh districts were split off from the then Puri district . In 2000 the name was changed to Khordha . The district extends over the coastal plain south of the Mahanadi River. It extends in the south to Chilika Lake . The coast of the Bay of Bengal is at a distance of 20 km. The area of ​​the district is 2887.5 km². The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Khordha . The capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar , is in the district. Jatni is another city in the Khordha district.

In the 2011 census, the population was 2,251,673. The gender ratio was 929 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 86.88% (91.78% for men, 81.61% for women). 95.38% of the population are followers of Hinduism , 3.73% are Muslims .

Administrative division

The district consists of 2 sub-divisions : Bhubaneswar and Khordha.
