The Bargarh District ( Oriya ବରଗଡ଼ ଜିଲ୍ଲା Baragaṛa Jillā , also Baragarh ) is a district in the Indian state of Odisha . In 2011 there were 1,481,255 inhabitants in the district.

The seat of the district administration is the city ​​of the same name . The area is 5837 km². The district was detached on April 1, 1993 from the Sambalpur district .

geography

The district of Bargarh is in the west of the state of Odisha and borders on the state of Chhattisgarh and the districts of Jharsuguda , Sambalpur, Sonpur , Balangir and Nuapara . There are two ranges of hills in the district, the Baragahar Hills in the north and the Gandhamardhan Hills in the south on the border with the Balangir District. Temperatures vary between at least 10 ° C in December and up to 46 ° C in May. Annual rainfall is around 1527 mm. The two main rivers are the Ong and the Jeera , which each flow into the Mahanadi . The Hirakud Reservoir is located in the northeast of the district .

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the gender ratio was 977 women per 1,000 men. 83.68% of the men could read and write, but only 65.38% of the women, a total of 74.62% of the population could read and write. The majority of the residents (98.6%) are Hindus , Christianity (0.75%) and Islam (0.5%) only play a subordinate role. Oriya (in the Sambalpuri dialect) is spoken predominantly , in cities also Hindi .

The district is more rural, with only 7.7% of the population living in cities. Over half of them live in the capital of the district.

economy

The agricultural use is characterized in particular by rice cultivation, as this is favored by the irrigation from the Hirakud reservoir. In addition, sugar cane and peanuts are grown in considerable quantities. Weaving is also an important economic factor in the district . Fabrics from Bargarh are made in the sambalpuri style and are considered to be outstanding. Other industrial sectors that are located in the Bargarh district are cement production and, to a lesser extent, the chemical industry. Limestone , graphite , clay, quartzite and bauxite can be found in mineral resources .
