Life

Laura Theresa Epps was a daughter of the British doctor George Napoleon Epps, her two older sisters Emily and Ellen Epps were also well-known painters. Through the Pre-Raphaelite Ford Madox Brown , she met the Dutch painter and widower with two daughters Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) in 1869 , whom she married in 1871, they had no other children. Lawrence Alma-Tadema was promoted to a Knight Bachelor degree in Great Britain in 1899 , and henceforth she carried the courtesy title Lady .

From 1873 Alma-Tadema exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts , followed by participation in the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878 . The British artist was also regularly represented at German exhibitions since 1881. In addition to free art, she also devoted herself to commercial graphics and worked as an illustrator for The English Illustrated Magazine . In 1896 she received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin .

Her paintings can now be found in international museums such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It is above all the works of classical content that, due to their stylistic ties with her husband and teacher Lawrence Alma-Tadema, often lead to confusion with his works.
