Life

Mabel Álvarez was born on November 28, 1891 on the island of Oahu, the youngest of five children. Her father, Luis Fernández Álvarez, came from Spain , immigrated to the USA via Cuba , where he got rich through real estate in Los Angeles . He made a name for himself in leprosy research with Father Damien , and their mother, Clementine Setza, came from a prominent family in St. Paul , Minnesota . In 1906 the family moved to Berkeley , California , and in 1909 to Los Angeles, where Mabel Álvarez went to Los Angeles High School . She received her first drawing lessons from the art teacher James Edwin McBurney - after Álvarez won a gold medal for a mural for the Panama-California exhibition in San Diego - he strongly advised her to continue her studies. Álvarez studied at the renowned Academy for Illustration and Painting under William Cahill (1878–1924) and John Rich Hubbard (1876–1954) in Los Angeles. In her painting style, the artist tried a harmonious mediation between ideal and reality. In addition, Álvarez worked as an illustrator , draftsman and graphic artist.
