Vern G. Swanson

Vern Grosvenor Swanson (born February 1945 in Central Point , Oregon ) is an American art historian and retired museum director.

Life

Swanson has Swedish roots. He is the youngest of six children of the worker Oscar Swanson and his wife Mildred. His interest in art was aroused at school.

After attending high school one followed from 1964 to 1969 with the help of football - grant a drawing and painting studies at Brigham Young University in Provo , Utah . He then worked for a year in the National Gallery of Art , Washington, DC , then in art galleries in Salt Lake City and Provo. In Provo, he met his Canadian wife Elaine Milne. He then worked for a year at an art gallery in San Francisco before he and his wife moved to Calgary , Canada , where he spent a year helping his father-in-law on construction and playing semi-professional football. Back in Salt Lake City, he did a master’s degree at the University of Utah with Robert S. Olpin , which he completed in 1973.

He then became an Assistant Professor of Art and Art History at Auburn University in Alabama . In April 1975 his wife and their just born son John Brett died. A year later he went back to Utah, where he met his second wife Judy Nielson, with whom he has two daughters. In 1978 he enrolled at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London , where he received his PhD in art history.

From August 1980 until his retirement in August 2012, Swanson was director of the Springville Museum of Art in Utah . He is the author of numerous publications, including several books.

Since his retirement he has lived in Springville and writes not only art history but also religious and political books. He still does volunteer work for the Springville Museum of Art.
