The salon painting is a style of painting during the 19th century.

The name Salon Painting is originally derived from the annual exhibitions in the Salon carré des Louvre in Paris (→ Salon de Paris ). Since the time of Louis XV. Art exhibitions, commonly referred to as salons, took place in Paris (originally only in the Salon carré des Louvre). These were introduced by Louis Philippe. Works of art by artists recognized by the authorities were exhibited here.

So it was only possible to exhibit works of art that met the public's taste, but mainly those of the Parisian ruling class. So the artists adapted to this both in terms of content and style: historicizing and literary-mythological themes were painted , which at the same time offered a pretext and justification for the display of a lot of bare skin. In this way, the voyeurism of the upper class, but also of the wider public, was served. Dramatic scenes with many characters were preferred. The way of painting is classicistic and academic .
