Life

Initially studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Architecture and then trained in sculpture with Fritz Schaper . After he had created some statuettes and busts, he turned to painting in Berlin under Fritz Paulsen . Then he went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he became a student of Wilhelm Sohn .

Kiesel's complete works represent the genre of society portraits in the late 19th century. He cultivated salon painting and preferred to depict young beautiful girls or women, often in rich interiors . He had great success with it, whereby his special talent lay in the perfect rendering of everything material. “The Mandolin Player” gives an impression of the painter's artistic conception and performance skills. The later “Portrait of Otto Heyl's Wife ”, on the other hand, shows a somewhat simpler form. But he showed his perfection in the painting “ Petrarch's Laura ”, dedicated to the Italian poet Francesco Petrarca.

Kiesel was arguably the best portrait painter of his time, and his works have won several gold medals at exhibitions at the Berlin Academy. He was also represented in the exhibitions of the Academy in Düsseldorf , the Munich Glass Palace , the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, the annual exhibitions in Vienna in 1872, 1891 and 1892 , the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1909 and the World Exhibition in 1911 in Rome .
