Emmi Lewald

Emilie Auguste Marie Lewald (born December 5, 1866 in Oldenburg , † September 29, 1946 in Apolda ) was a German writer and suffragette .

Life

As the second daughter of the government assistant and later Minister of State Günther Jansen (1831–1914) and his wife Marie Frommelt (1843–1928), she grew up in her hometown with an educated middle-class upbringing in which her writing talent could develop freely. In 1888 she published her first work as "Contemporary character study from German salons" under the pseudonym Emil Roland, which she continued to keep for the most part. Due to an indiscretion, the publication in Oldenburg caused a scandal, as the Oldenburg Society believed that the main characters mentioned in the work were officers of the local garrison who had been alienated from literature. Lewald withdrew from the hostility and left Oldenburg for extended trips.

Volumes of poetry and short stories followed . She later published numerous novels and travelogues. The latter resulted from her travels through Germany, where the Wartburg was a preferred refuge, and Italy. On August 17, 1896, she married the Privy Finance Councilor Felix Lewald and moved to Berlin without giving up her ambivalent relationship to her hometown, which is partly reflected in her literary criticism of social backwardness. In Berlin she was also involved in the bourgeois women's movement, namely as a member of the board of directors of the German Women's Club and the board of the Lyceum Club as well as chairwoman of the Association of Berlin Artists and Art Friends (1909–1910). In addition, she became part of the Berlin salons and found increasing attention and recognition with her work there. She was also in contact with Bertha von Suttner .

After the death of her husband, she lived in a nursing home in Apolda . Your final resting place is in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .
