Balangir (also Bolangir , Oriya : ବଲାଙ୍ଗୀର ) is a city in the Indian state of Odisha .

It is the capital of the eponymous Tehsil in the district of the same name . 98,238 inhabitants live in Balangir (2011), compared to 69,920 in 1991. 51.86% of the population are men and 48.14% are women. Oriya , Hindi and English are spoken predominantly .

Balangir is on the NH 201 motorway from Bargarh and Bhawanipatna and has a railway station.

Balangir was founded by Balaram Deo , the 12th king of Patna in the middle of the 16th century. From 1880 Balangir was the capital of the princely state .
