Bhawanipatna is the capital of the Kalahandi district in the west of the Indian state of Odisha .
Bhawanipatna is in the Eastern Ghats . The Tel River flows north, 20 km west of the city. The national highway NH 201 ( Nabarangpur - Bargarh ) runs through the city. A main road leads from Bhawanipatna to Raipur , 220 km northwest .
Bhawanipatna used to be the capital of the princely state of Kalahandi .
As a city, Bhawanipatna has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 20 wards . In the 2011 census, the population was 69,045.
