Nabarangpur (also Nabarangapur ; old names: Nowrangapur or Nowrangpur ) is the capital of the district of the same name in the extreme southwest of the Indian state of Odisha .
Nabarangpur is located in the hill country west of the Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 582 m . The upper reaches of the Indravati flows south of the city in a westerly direction. The national highway NH 201 connects Nabarangpur with the city of Bhawanipatna, 100 km to the northeast, and with the city of Jeypore, 40 km to the south . The Odisha trunk road 39 leads to the city of Umerkote , 60 km northwest .
As a city, Nabarangpur has the status of a municipality . It extends over an area of 21 km² and is divided into 17 wards . In the 2011 census, the population was 29,960.
