Princely state of Kalahandi in The Imperial Gazetteer of India |
Kalahandi (also Karond ) was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . Its capital was the place Bhawanipatna .
The principality of the Nagvansi - Rajputs is said to have been founded by Raghunat Sai in 1005. In the course of the Marathas Wars Kalahandi had to recognize the suzerainty of the Marathas ; from the beginning of the 19th century until 1947 it was a British protectorate . Raja Brij Mohan Deo (1897-1939) was promoted to Maharaja . Kalahandi had an area of 9700 km² and 351,000 inhabitants in 1901.
The last maharaja joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Kalahandi Orissa (Odisha) and thus India incorporated. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved.
