Talcher is a city in the Indian state of Odisha .

Talcher used to be the capital of the principality of the same name and is now located in the Angul district 85 km west-northwest of Cuttack . The city is located at the foot of the Eastern Ghats on the right bank of the Brahmani . The district capital Angul is 17 km to the southwest . The national highways NH 23 and NH 200 run through Talcher. The city is connected to the railway network. To the west of Talcher are coal mines . The former royal palace of Talcher is located directly on the banks of the Brahmani.

In the 2011 census, the population was 40,841. The city has the status of a municipality and is divided into 21 wards .
