Angul is a district capital in the Indian state of Odisha .

The city forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . It is located 90 km west-northwest of Cuttack at the foot of the Eastern Ghats, 17 km west of the Brahmani river . The national highway NH 42 (Cuttack - Sambalpur ) runs through Angul. The city is connected to the railway network. There is an aluminum smelter ( Nalco ) east of Angul .

In the 2011 census, the population was 43,795. The city has the status of a municipality and is divided into 23 wards .
