Koriya , also known as Korea , is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .
The area is 6604 km². The administrative seat is the city of Baikunthpur .
history
Koriya was the center of the former princely state of Korea .
Koriya District was established on May 25, 1998 when it was created from parts of Surguja District . The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established. The district later became part of the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

The population was 658,917 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 12.38%. Koriya has a gender ratio of 968 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 70.64% in 2011 . Literacy is thus slightly below the national average. Almost 91.7% of the population are Hindus , approx. 3.9% are Muslims , approx. 1.4% are Christians , approx. 0.2% each are Jainas or Sikhs and approx. 2.6% have no religious affiliation participated in or practiced other religions. 14.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .
Almost 31.2% of the population live in cities.
