Durg is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 8535 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Durg .

history

The district belonged to Madhya Pradesh until 2000 , when the new state of Chhattisgarh was founded. In 2012, the district was made smaller through splits.

population

The population was 3,343,872 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 18.98% and was therefore very high. Raipur has a gender ratio of 988 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 79.06% in 2011 , an increase of almost 4 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 93.6% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2.5% are Muslims , approx. 0.7% each are Christians and Sikhs , approx. 0.6% are Buddhists , approx. 0.5% are Jainas and approx 1.4% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. Children under 6 years of age are 12.9% of the population. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .

Almost 38.4% of the population live in cities. The largest cities are Bhilai Nagar with 625,700 and Durg with 268,806 inhabitants, which together form an agglomeration.

economy

Compared to other districts of poor Chhattisgarh, the Durg district is relatively urbanized and industrialized. The Bhilai Steel Plant is located in Bhilai , the first Indian plant for the production of steel rails, which was founded in 1955 with the help of the Soviet Union and has since been modernized.
