Korba is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 6598 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Korba .

history

The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established.

population

The population was 1,206,640 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.25% and was therefore very high. Korba has a gender ratio of 969 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 72.37% in 2011 . Literacy is thus slightly below the national average. Almost 93.9% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2.5% are Muslims , approx. 1.8% are Christians , approx. 0.3% are Sikhs , approx. 0.1% each are Jainas or Buddhists and approx. 1.4% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 14.3% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .

Almost 37.0% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Korba with 363,390 inhabitants.

Korba is known for its coal mines such as Gevra (one of the largest coal mines in Asia), Kusmunda and Dipka .
