Bhilai ( Hindi : भिलाई , Bhilāī ; also Bhilainagar or Bhilai Nagar ) is a city ( municipal corporation ) in the district of Durg in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

At the 2011 census it had around 625,000 inhabitants.

It is located directly on the Mumbai - Haora rail link and is 40 kilometers from Raipur , the capital of Chhattisgarh, and 11 kilometers from Durg . The city is part of the Durg-Bhilai agglomeration with around one million inhabitants.

Bhilai has one of the largest steel mills in India (Bhilai Steel Plant) with more than 50,000 employees. The plant, operated by the Steel Authority of India , was a joint Soviet-Indian project and started production in 1959. It sources iron ore from its own mines south of Bhilai. Many of the city's health facilities and schools are operated by the steel mill. Since 1986 there has been university education at the Bhilai Institute of Technology .

With the construction of the steel mill, Bhilai was developed as a planned town . It is divided and structured into independent sectors - there are now 16 - each of which is equipped with schools, a health center and a shopping complex.
