Trichophyton tonsurans is askin fungus ( anthropophilic dermatophyte )thatcolonizeshuman horny substances worldwide. It cantrigger dermatophytoses in humans, especially tinea capitis (old names: kahlgrind , ringworm , kringworm , shearing lichen ). Like all dermatophytes feeds Trichophyton tonsurans of keratin . The teleomorph , i.e. the sexual stage of T. tonsurans , is still unknown.

The transmission from person to person occurs through direct or indirect contact, the latter mainly through combs or hats. The fungus first grows in the direction of the hair follicle, then grows around the hair and finally penetrates the hair ( endothrich ). There, 4–7 µm large arthrospores form , making the hair brittle and breaking off a few millimeters above the scalp.

Cultural behavior

T. tonsurans culture

On two-week-old cultures, T. tonsurans appears on Sabouraud dextrose agar as colonies approx. 2 cm in size, which appear wrinkled like suede and have a wide, flat edge. The cultures look reddish or pink, which can lead to confusion with Trichophyton rubrum . Some trunks are yellowish.

In the microscopic image is T. tonsurans by numerous 3-10 microns long and 1.5-5 microns wide micro conidia in the mostly single sometimes laterally botryoidal to the hyphae are. Macroconidia are rarely formed. They have two to four, rarely six, chambers, are colorless and smooth-walled.
