Cabinet of Rajiv Gandhi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rajiv Gandhi cabinet was established in India on October 31, 1984 by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of the Indian National Congress (INC). It replaced Indira Gandhi III's cabinet after Rajiv Gandhi's mother and long-time Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was murdered on October 31, 1984. The Gandhi cabinet remained in office until December 2, 1989, when it was replaced by the VP Singh cabinet .

From the parliamentary elections on December 24th, 27th and 28th, 1984 , Gandhi's INC emerged as the strongest party and had a clear absolute majority with 404 of the 516 members in the Lok Sabha . This was followed by an extensive cabinet reshuffle. In the parliamentary elections on November 22nd and 26th, 1989 , the INC lost 9.57 percentage points and 207 of its 404 seats, so that it only provided 197 of the 531 members of the Lok Sabha. Then formed Vishwanath Pratap Singh of the Janata Dal with the support of several other parties a new government, the first in nearly a decade that has not been made of INC.
