Madhavsinh Solanki

Madhavsinh Solanki ( Gujarati માધવસિંહ સોલંકી ; * July 29, 1927 ; † January 9, 2021 in Gandhinagar ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was three times Chief Minister of Gujarat and Foreign Minister of India .

Life

After attending school, Solanki first completed an undergraduate degree , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.). A subsequent postgraduate studies of law he finished with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and was then as a lawyer working.

Solanki began his political engagement in 1957 when he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Bombay for the Indian National Congress. After this state was divided into the two states of Gujarat and Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat and was a member of this until 1968.

On December 24, 1976 Solanki was the successor of Babhubai Jashbai Patel and a temporary presidential administration ( President's rule ) for the first time Chief Minister of Gujarat and held this office until April 10, 1977; Babhubai Jashbai Patel succeeded him the following day. On June 7, 1980 he was again as successor to Patel and a renewed President's rule chief minister of Gujarat. After more than five years in office, he was replaced on August 6, 1985 by his party colleague Amarsinh Chaudhury in this office.

On April 3, 1988, Solanki was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian parliament , was a member of this for two legislative terms until April 2, 2000. During this time he was temporarily chairman of the Upper House Standing Committee on Internal Affairs.

In June 1988, Solanki was appointed by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as Union Minister of Planning for the first time in a Union government and held this ministerial office until the end of Gandhi's term in November 1989.

On December 10, 1989, Solanki, who was three times President of the Congress Party of Gujarat and temporarily General Secretary of the All-Indian National Congress, succeeded Amarsinh Chaudhury for the third and final time as Chief Minister of Gujarat. After almost four months, he was replaced in this position on March 4, 1990 by Chimanbhai Patel of the Janata Party .

Most recently, Solanki was from June 21, 1991 to March 31, 1992 in the cabinet of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao Foreign Minister (Union Minister of External Affairs) .

His marriage to Vimlabahen resulted in three sons and two daughters, including Bharatsinh Madhavsinh Solanki , who was a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of parliament, and in the Manmohan Singh II cabinet, successively Minister of State for Energy, Minister of State for Railways and Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sewerage .
