Bali Ram Bhagat ( Hindi बलि राम भगत , born October 7, 1922 in Patna , Orissa Province and Bihar , British India ; † January 2, 2011 in New Delhi ) was a politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was among other things Foreign Minister and was governor of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan .

Life

Bhagat was first appointed to a Union government in 1969 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as Union Minister of Supply . Shortly afterwards, in 1969, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Gandhi appointed him Union Minister of Foreign Trade , which he held until 1970.

On January 15, 1976, he was elected as the successor to Gurdial Singh Dhillon as spokesman for the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament , and thus president of the parliament. On March 26, 1977, he was succeeded in this office by Neelam Sanjiva Reddy , who became president a few months later .

On 25 September 1985 he appointed Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as foreign minister (Union Minister of External Affairs) , a post which was previously carried out by the Prime Minister himself. On May 12, 1986, Father Shiv Shankar succeeded him as Foreign Minister.

On February 11, 1993, President Shankar Dayal Sharma appointed him to succeed Surendra Nath as governor of Himachal Pradesh . However, he only held this post for a few months and was replaced on June 30, 1993 by Gulsher Ahmed . Instead, President Sharma appointed him governor of Rajasthan on June 30, 1993, and thus succeeded Dhanik Lal Mandal . After almost five years in office, he was replaced as governor of this state by Darbara Singh .
