youth

Pranab Mukherjee was born in the village of Mirati in the Birbhum district of West Bengal to Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee and Rajlakshmi Mukherjee. His father was active in the Indian National Congress from an early age , a committed and temporarily imprisoned activist of the independence movement and later an employee of the Indian Foreign Ministry.

On July 13, 1957 he married Suvra Mukherjee, with her he has two sons and a daughter.

Political career

Mukherjee can look back on a political career spanning more than four decades, beginning with his election to Rajya Sabha in 1969; he was re-elected several times, most recently in 1999. In 1973 he became a member of the Cabinet as Vice Minister for Industrial Development. His first swearing-in was more of a coincidence when he was present as a witness to the swearing-in of ministers. The number of officials to be sworn in was viewed as a disaster; so Mukherjee was sworn in too.

But Mukherjee proved to be a capable politician and grew in competence and reputation and finally achieved the important office of finance minister from 1982 to 1984. In 1984, he was elected as the world's best finance minister in this capacity in a poll.

After the death of Indira Gandhi , he fell out with her successor Rajiv Gandhi , as a result of which he no longer belonged to his cabinet and left the party for a short time. After a period of political emigration, Mukherjee rejoined the party in 1989 and continued his political career; PV Narasimha Rao appointed him deputy chairman of the planning commission and later federal minister. Mukherjee was foreign minister in Rao's cabinet for the first time from 1995 to 1996 . In 1997 he was honored with the title of “Extraordinary Parliamentarian”.

Mukherjee enjoys great respect in his party; Sonia Gandhi's biographer Rasheed Kidwai said of him: “[...] leading members of Congress see him as a living dictionary. He is an authority on everything from food processing to diplomacy and social policy. ”When Sonia Gandhi hesitantly entered the political arena, Mukherjee was one of her most important mentors.

On October 24, 2006, he was appointed Foreign Minister of India . Mukherjee was briefly under discussion as a presidential candidate, but the plan was soon dropped because Mukherjee, who was seen as a capable politician, was not wasted in the office of Indian president, which was practically exempt from competencies. After the parliamentary elections in India in 2009 , he took over the office of finance minister.

In 2008 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .

Pranab Mukherjee was nominated as a candidate for president by the ruling Congress Party in mid-June 2012. He ran in the election on July 19, 2012 against the BJP- supported PA Sangma ; incumbent Pratibha Patil did not run for a second term. Mukherjee was elected on July 19, 2012 not only by the allies of the Congress Party gathered in the United Progressive Alliance , but also by the Janata Dal (United) , Shiv Sena , the Samajwadi Party , partly the Communist parties and some members of the BJP supported.

International significance

Pranab Mukherjee was a member of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund , the World Bank , the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank . He later chaired the Group of 24 . As a representative of India, he signed the Marrakesh Agreement , which led to the establishment of the WTO and, among other things, made the TRIPS Agreement come into force (see UN Treaty No. 31874, p. 26). In 1995 he was the chairman of the SAARC Ministerial Conference .
