Career

Souza began his career in 1996 in the University of New Hampshire team in the US college league Hockey East . There he was able to convince in his first season, scored 26 points in 39 games and was elected to the all-rookie team of Hockey East. During the NHL Entry Draft 1997 he was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round in a total of 67th position. The trained striker first finished his studies and moved in the summer of 2000 to the American Hockey League with the Norfolk Admirals , the then farm team of the Chicago Blackhawks, after he had initially been elected to the second all-star team in his college league.

Ultimately, Souza played exclusively in the AHL and was not allowed to prove himself in the National Hockey League . In the following years, the left shooter changed clubs several times and was under contract with the AHL clubs Bridgeport Sound Tigers , Portland Pirates and Hershey Bears , among others . Since he did not make a breakthrough at any of the clubs, he decided against a further commitment in North America and instead moved to the EHC Basel in the Swiss National League A for the 2005/06 season . There he only played three games and joined the EHC Olten in the National League B during the current season . He didn't finish the season in Olten either and signed a contract with the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League at the end of the season . With the Haien, the then 28-year-old was able to reach the play-off semi-finals in 2006 , where they finally failed with 2: 3 wins against the DEG Metro Stars . Souza scored two scorer points in nine play-off games.

He then moved to the Italian Serie A1 for SG Cortina , where he developed into a top performer and in 2007 won the club's first Italian championship title with the team from Veneto after 32 years. Mike Souza went on the ice for SG Cortina in the 2008/09 season. In August 2010, the striker moved to league rivals HC Bozen , where he ended his active career following the 2010/11 season.

Since September 2011, Souza initially worked as an assistant coach for the Brown University team from the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After serving in the same position at the University of Connecticut from 2013 to 2015 , he has been the head coach of the University of New Hampshire's ice hockey team since 2015 .
