Muhammad Hidayatullah

Muhammad Hidayatullah (born December 17, 1905 in Betul , † September 18, 1992 in Bombay ) was an Indian lawyer. He was Chief Justice of India from 1968 to 1970 , President of the Republic of India from July 20 to August 24, 1969, and Vice President of India from 1979 to 1984 .

Life

Hidayatullah's father, Khan Bahadur Hafiz Mohammad Wilayatullah, was an administrator in the Central Provinces . He first completed his school education in Raipur . He then attended Morris College in Nagpur , where he graduated with a BA . He received his MA from Nagpur University in 1928, his father's family settled in Nagpur. Hidayatullah studied at Trinity College , Cambridge from 1927 to 1930 and was admitted as a barrister (Bar-at-Law) by the Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn in 1930 . From 1930 to 1946 he was an attorney at Nagpur High Court , from 1943 to 1946 he was Advocate-General of the Central Provinces and Berar there . In 1946 he moved to the Nagpur High Court as judge, where he was Chief Justice from 1954 to 1956. He also taught at several universities.

From November 1, 1956, he was Chief Justice at the newly established Madhya Pradesh High Court for two years . In 1958 he was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judge and took over the highest judicial office in India, Chief Justice of India on February 25, 1968, which he held until December 16, 1970. In this capacity he became Indian Acting President for one month after the death of Zakir Hussain in 1969 .

From August 31, 1979 to August 30, 1984 he was Vice President of India under Presidents Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Giani Zail Singh .

A university in Raipur was named after Muhammad Hidayatullah.
