Ram Nath Kovind ( Hindi राम नाथ कोविन्द ; born October 1, 1945 in the Kanpur Dehat district , United Provinces , British India ) is an Indian politician and the President of India since July 25, 2017 .

biography

Ram Nath Kovind was born into a Dalit family two years before the end of British colonial rule in what was then the United Provinces (now the state of Uttar Pradesh ) . He studied at Kanpur University (Uttar Pradesh) and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws ( BLL ) and a Bachelor of Commerce ( B.com ). He then worked as a lawyer. From 1977 to 1979 he represented the interests of the Indian central government at the Delhi High Court and was permanent advisor to the Indian government at the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993 .

In 1991 Kovind joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected by his party in the 1991 election for Lok Sabha in the constituency 63-Ghatampur , but was defeated by the opposing candidate from Janata Dal . In April 1994 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha , the first chamber (the "House of States"), of the Indian Parliament . There he represented the state of Uttar Pradesh for 12 years until March 2006. During his membership in parliament he worked on a number of committees, including the Committee for the Affairs of the Scheduled Castes / Tribes , the Interior Committee, the Parliamentary Committees for Oil and Gas, for Social Justice and Emancipation and the Legal Committee. As a member of parliament, Kovind went on study and information trips to Thailand , Nepal , Pakistan , Singapore , Germany , Switzerland , France , the United Kingdom and the United States . He was also temporarily accredited as Indian Ambassador to the United Nations and in this capacity gave a speech to the UN General Assembly in October 2002 .

Representing the interests of the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) became a focus of his political work . The 79th, 81st and 82nd amendments , which strengthened the rights of the SC and ST and all became law in 2000 under the Vajpayee administration , were also in part attributed to his intense lobbying.

After his time in the Rajya Sabha ended, Kovind made an attempt to get into politics in Uttar Pradesh and ran in the 2007 election to the Uttar Pradesh parliament in the 279-Bhognipur constituency . However, he only reached third place in terms of votes and was therefore not elected.

On August 8, 2015, President Pranab Mukherjee appointed him Governor of Bihar State .

In the run-up to India's 2017 presidential election , the BJP-led National Democratic Aliance announced on June 19, 2017 that Kovind was its candidate for the presidency. Kovind clearly won the election with 65.6% of the vote from the electoral college . His rival candidate Meira Kumar from the Congress Party came in at 34.5%. On July 25, 2017, Kovind took office as President.
