Meira Kumar (born March 31, 1945 in Patna ) is an Indian politician and member of the lower house of the Indian Parliament for the Congress Party . In June 2009 she was the first woman to be elected President of Parliament.

Life

Kumar is the daughter of Jagjivan Ram , a member of the government under Prime Minister Morarji Desai and a fighter for the rights of the Dalit (caste of the “untouchables” from which she comes). She is a law graduate from the University of Delhi and a former diplomat.

From 2004 to 2009 she headed the Ministry of Social Justice and Delegation of Accountability in the Manmohan Singh I Cabinet . Her unanimous election as President of Parliament on June 3, 2009 was a sensation and a contribution to the long-planned introduction of a 33 percent quota for women. In her short inaugural address, she described herself as a passionate advocate of the empowerment of women .
