Vice President of India

Vice President of India is the second highest office in India after the President . Venkaiah Naidu has been the incumbent since 2017 .

The office of Vice President is legitimized in Article 63 of the Indian Constitution . The Vice-President is elected by the members of both Houses of Parliament ( Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha ) for five years, the terms of office are not limited. The prerequisites in the person correspond to those for the President. According to Article 67 of the Indian Constitution, he can be removed from office by a majority of the votes of both Houses of Parliament.

The vice-president takes over the office of president provisionally in the event of the death, resignation or dismissal of the president until a new president takes office. The Vice President can take over the day-to-day business even if the President is ill for a long time or is absent.

The Indian Vice President is also President of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, the Rajya Sabha.

Six vice-presidents later took over the office of president.
