Gopal Swarup Pathak

Gopal Swarup Pathak (born February 24, 1896 in Bareli , Uttar Pradesh , † August 31, 1982 ) was an Indian lawyer and politician and from 1969 to 1974 the fourth Vice President of India .

biography

After leaving school, Pathak studied law at the University of Allahabad , then worked as a lawyer and then as a judge . He was last in 1945 a judge at the High Court of Allahabad ( Allahabad High Court ).

After the sovereignty of India on August 15, 1947, he also began a political career and was a member of the House of States ( Rajya Sabha ) between 1960 and 1966 . He was also Chancellor of the University of Mysore , Bangalore University and Karnataka University.

After a year as Minister of Justice in the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi between 1966 and 1967, he was governor of the state of Karnataka from May 13, 1967 to May 30, 1969 .

He was then elected Vice President of India and during his term of office from August 31, 1969 to August 30, 1974, he was also President of the Rajya Sabha. He was preferred by Prime Minister Gandhi to the then incumbent President of the House of Lords Violet Alva , who then resigned from this office.

His son Raghunandan Swarup Pathak was also a lawyer and President of the Supreme Court between 1986 and 1989 .
