The Allahabad High Court ( Hindi इलाहाबाद उच्च न्यायालय ) or High Court of Judicature at Allahabad is a High Court in the city Prayagraj (until 2018 Allahabad ) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . It took its seat there in 1869 and is one of the oldest such dishes in India.

history

On March 17, 1866 , a higher court under the name High Court of North-Western Provinces was set up in Agra , the administrative seat of the North Western Provinces and Oudh , which essentially comprised the area of the present-day Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand . The seat of the court was moved to Allahabad in 1869, and with effect from March 11, 1919, the court was given its current name, High Court of Judicature at Allahabad . After India's independence, the Allahabad High Court also took over the jurisdiction of the previous Chief Court of Oudh in 1948 . When the constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, the Allahabad High Court became the highest court in the state of Uttar Pradesh. After the northwestern part of Uttar Pradesh in the Himalayas became a separate state under the name Uttaranchal (since 2006 Uttarakhand), the jurisdiction of the Allahabad High Court for this area expired. The High Court in Allahabad is still the court with the largest catchment area in all of India, in terms of population (over 200 million).

In 2015, there were 160 judges on the Allahabad High Court.
