Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu ( Telugu ముప్పవరపు వెంకయ్య నాయుడు ; born July 1, 1949 in Chavatapalem , then state of Madras , now Andhra Pradesh ) is an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has been Vice President of India since August 11, 2017 and by virtue of office chairman of the Rajya Sabha . From 1998 to 2016 he represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha. He has been representing Rajasthan there since 2016 .

biography

Naidu was born in 1949 in the Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district in what is now the state of Andhra Pradesh. He studied politics and international law and began to get involved in politics. Both as a student leader and as a political figure, Naidu became known as a good speaker who advocated the interests of farmers and the development of backward areas. He started working for activist Jayaprakash Narayan in 1974 . From 1977 to 1980 he was leader of the youth organization of the Janata Party and from 1978 to 1985 he represented the constituency of Udaygiri in the lower house of Andhra Pradesh. In 1980 he moved from the Janata Party to the newly founded Bharatiya Janata Party and was its chairman from 1980 to 1985, its general secretary from 1985 to 1987 and its president in Andhra Pradesh from 1988 to 1993.

In 1993 he was promoted to General Secretary of the BJP at the national level and held this position for seven years. In 2000 he was appointed national minister for rural development in the Vajpayee III cabinet for two years . He then became president of the BJP until October 2004. Since April 2005 he has been the party's vice-president. After the BJP won the parliamentary elections in 2014 , he became Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Poverty Reduction and Parliamentary Affairs in the Modi I cabinet on May 26, 2014 . On July 6, 2016, he also became Minister for Information and Broadcasting. A year later, he resigned from both offices to take part in the 2017 Vice President election. He won the election before a committee of members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha with 516 votes against 244 votes for his opponent Gopal Krishna Gandhi and became the 15th Vice President of India.

Personal

He has been married since 1970 and has two children. In contrast to most politicians from South India, Naidu endeavored to learn and master Hindi and spoke in this language at public rallies in North India.

Naidu is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh .
