The Telugu Desam Party ( Telugu తెలుగు దేశం పార్టీ , "Telugu Country and People's Party", TDP ) is a regional party in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana .

Party history

The TDP was founded on March 21, 1982 by NT Rama Rao ("NTR"), a well-known and popular film actor and director in South India. The vast majority of the nearly 300 films in which NT Rama Rao was involved were made in Telugu and only a few in Tamil or Hindi . In these films, Rao often personified Hindu deities and was worshiped for them by viewers. He thus earned the reputation of a prominent representative of Telugic culture. NTR was chairman of the TDP until 1995. His successor as party leader was N. Chandrababu Naidu , who is still in office today (as of December 2018).

Programmatically, the TDP sees itself as a representative of the political, cultural and economic interests of the Telugu-speaking population of Andhra Pradesh. According to her party program she aims to establish a social welfare state for all social classes and for all ethnic groups in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP does not see itself as the primary Hindu party, but also addresses the Muslim and Christian minorities in Andhra Pradesh. The party program places particular emphasis on the promotion and development of agriculture and the training of young people.

Only 9 months after the party was founded, the TDP won the elections for the Andhra Pradesh parliament. The main political opponent was (and is still today) the Congress Party, which had dominated Andhra Pradesh until then . The TDP provided the Chief Minister and the government in Andhra Pradesh from 1983 to 1989 and from 1994 to 2004 .

In the nationwide elections for Lok Sabha , the Indian lower house, the TDP joined changing party alliances, initially on the left. From 1989 to 1996 she was a member of the National Front under the leadership of Janata Dal , which formed the Indian government from 1989 to 1990. Between 1996 and 1998 she was part of the United Front . In the 1999 and 2004 elections , she supported the center-right coalition of the National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2009 election she entered into an electoral alliance with the left-wing socialist communist parties of the Third Front . In the 2014 election , after some hesitation, the TDP entered into an electoral alliance with the BJP. For a long time there were substantive differences between the BJP and the TDP on the Telangana question, ie the formation of a separate state Telangana from parts of Andhra Pradesh. The TDP initially spoke out against it, the BJP was in favor.

The main opponent in all elections was always the Congress Party, but since 2011 also increasingly the newly founded YSR Congress Party , and in Telangana the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). In the regional elections to the parliament of Telangana on December 7, 2018, the TDS entered into an electoral alliance with the Congress Party against the ruling TRS. However, the election was lost for the allies and the TDS was reduced from 15 to only 2 members (out of 119) in the Telangana parliament, so that its sphere of activity has since been largely limited to Andhra Pradesh in the post-2014 borders.

On March 16, 2018, the TDP terminated the joint coalition with the BJP. The main reason given was Prime Minister Modi's refusal to provide Andhra Pradesh with special funds from Delhi after the secession of Telangana, as requested by the TDP.
