Murasoli Maran ( Tamil : முரசொலி மாறன் Muracoli Maran [ muɾəsoli maːrən ] * 17th August 1934 in Tirukkuvalai ; † 23. November 2003 in Chennai ) was an Indian politician of the regional party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from the state of Tamil Nadu . From 1967 until his death he was a member of the Indian parliament and the most important representative of the regional party DMK in the capital New Delhi . Maran was Minister for Urban Development from 1989 to 1990, Minister of Industry from 1996 to 1998, and Minister of Trade and Industry from 1999 until his death in 2003. Maran was also an editor and screenwriter .

Origin and entry into politics

Murasoli Maran was born on August 17, 1934 as Thyagaraja Sundaram in the village of Tirukkuvalai in what is now the Nagapattinam district near Tiruvarur . He later changed his Sanskrit maiden name to the Tamil name Maran for linguistic reasons . He received the name affix Murasoli after the magazine of the same name that he published. Maran completed his education with a Master of Arts at Pachaiappa's College in Madras (Chennai).

During his student days Murasoli Maran came into contact with the Dravidian Movement , which at that time advocated an independent identity for the Tamils ​​and became a member of the Tamil nationalist party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In 1967 Murasoli Maran was elected for the first time in a by-election from the constituency of Madras South to the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the all-India parliament.
