Siddhartha Shankar Ray

Siddhartha Shankar Ray (born October 20, 1920 in Kolkata ; † November 6, 2010 ibid) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress . He was a noted barrister , Minister of Education of the Indian Union, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Governor of Punjab, and Ambassador to the United States .

Origin and education

Ray's father, Sudhir Kumar Ray, was a barrister at Calcutta High Court . His mother Aparna Devi was the eldest daughter of Chittaranjan Das and Basanti Devi. He is married to Maya Ray, who grew up in England.

He was trained at the Presidency College in Calcutta and later in England.

Political career

Ray first became a barrister at Calcutta High Court. Later, with the assistance of Ashoke Kumar Sen, he became Minister of Justice in Bidhan Chandra Roy's cabinet in West Bengal . He eventually became Minister of Education and Youth Affairs in the Indian government of Indira Gandhi in the 1960s .

After the 1972 elections, he was Chief Minister of West Bengal from March 19, 1972 to June 21, 1977. He took office shortly after the end of the Bangladesh War and his tenure was dominated by the problem of repatriating more than a million refugees.

He was governor of the state of Punjab from April 2, 1986 to December 8, 1989. When the Congress Party came to power again in 1991, he was appointed Indian ambassador to the United States. He stayed that way until 1996. His involvement in Washington is seen as quite successful.

Ray died on November 6, 2010 at the age of 90.
