Chittaranjan Das ( Bengali চিত্তরঞ্জন দাস Cittarañjan Dās ; born November 5, 1870 in Kolkata , † June 16, 1925 in Darjiling ) was a Bengali lawyer and politician of the Indian independence movement. He was dubbed Deshbandhu ("friend of the country") by his followers . He was a member and president of the Indian National Congress .

Life

After training in England, Chittaranjan Das began his career in 1909 with the successful defense of Aurobindo Ghosh in the proceedings for his involvement in a bomb attack in Alipur (South Kolkata ) the previous year.

During the campaign of non-cooperation from 1919 to 1922 he was one of the leading supporters. He initiated first with Mahatma Gandhi to boycott British clothes and wore native Khadi -Clothes after he had destroyed his European matters. Together with Motilal Nehru , however, he later founded the Swaraj Party as a platform for expressing his non-moderate views in the fight against British colonial rule .

Chittaranjan Das was editor of the Forward (later Liberty ) newspaper and first mayor of Calcutta Corporation . He chaired the Indian National Congress in Gaya in 1922 . His health was in poor health throughout his political career.

He was an advocate of non-violent, constitutional independence. Subhash Chandra Bose is one of his political students .

The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works was named after him in his honor.
