Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) is an Indian manufacturer of locomotives located near Asansol . The state-owned company owned by Indian Railways started production in 1950 and is now one of the world's largest locomotive manufacturers. It is named after the statesman and freedom fighter Deshbandhu Chittaranjan .

history

In the late 1930s, it was investigated whether building a locomotive factory would be economically viable. First a place north of Kolkata near Kanchrapara was considered, but the idea could not be pursued because of the division of India . In December 1947 it was decided to build the plant near Mihijam about 32 km from Asansol and 237 km from Kolkata, in a place where there was both suitable underground for the construction of the factory buildings and sufficient energy from hydroelectric and thermal power plants would be available. The project was originally called Loco Building Work and was only given the new name when it opened on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force.

Initially steam locomotives were manufactured, from 1961 electric locomotives for 1500 V direct current and from 1963 those for 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current . From 1967 DC traction motors and contactors were built. In 1968 the production of diesel-hydraulic locomotives was added. Steam locomotive construction was discontinued in 1974 after 2,351 steam locomotives from five different series left the factory. The construction of diesel locomotives was discontinued in 1994 after 842 locomotives of seven different series were built.

In 1998, the construction of electric locomotives with asynchronous motors began , which were initially built with GTO converters and from November 2015 only with IGBT converters. The construction of conventional electric locomotives with tap changers , rectifiers and mixed current motors was stopped in December 2015.
